At Spiritual Shores...

Welcome aboard your trustworthy place to explore the best places to roam in this world. With our every newsletter, we look forward to make you aware of places you shouldn’t miss to travel.

In this issue we are going to leave you wet in admiration...with the mystic shores of Dwarka and Somnath in Gujarat.

Dwarka:

It is located in the Jamnagar District of Gujarat on the mouth of the Gomti River into the Gulf of Kutch. The city derives its name from the word "Dwar" meaning door in Sanskrit. It’s among the holiest cities in Hinduism and one of the 4 main " dhams" along with Badrinath, Puri, Rameshwaram. Rated as one of the seven most ancient cities in the country, the legendary city of Dwarka in Hindu mythology was the dwelling place of Krishna. It is believed that, due to damage and destruction by the sea, the city of Dwarka got engulfed six times and the current city is the 7th version.

The fable surfaces on reality shores

Lord Krishna's fabled underwater Dwarka city was long believed to exist only in the realm of mythology, before the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) conclusively proved its existence on the basis of underwater findings. Recent archealogical findings have shown that there existed a city resembling the city described in Mahabharata. To find more on underwater Dwarka click this link...

The Dwarkadheesh temple

Built on the north bank of the Gomti creek, it dates back to 2,500 years. Sixty columns support the roof of the audience hall of the temple. The main temple is five-story high with the lavishly carved conical spire rising to a height of 157 feet. There is the one-meter tall, four handed black idol of Ranchhodrai, the ruler of Dwarika.

Around Dwarka

Rukmini Devi Temple...

This small temple is an architectural masterpiece. Rukmini is the most important of Krishna's 16,108 wives. The temple walls are decorated with beautiful paintings depicting her pastimes with Krishna. This temple is said to date back to the 12th century.

Gomati Ghat...

Gomati, the descended Ganges, meets the sea at Chakra-tirtha Ghat.
To take bath where the Gomati meets the ocean is said to offer liberation.

Gopi-tallava...

It's the kund (pond) where Lord Krishna met the gopis when they came to see him at Dwarka. The sacred clay from Gopi-tallava is known as gopi-candana and is used by devotees of Krishna to make the tilak marks on their bodies. It is 20km north of Dwarka on the way to Bet Dwarka.

Bhalka Tirth...

The spot where Lord Krishna was mistaken for a deer and struck by an arrow while sleeping in a deerskin. It is said Lord Krishna was cremated at Dehotsarga at Triveni Ghat.

Somnath Temple

The temple of Somnath is situated close to Dwarka on the western coast of Gujarat, India. It is one of the twelve Jyotirlings (golden lingas) symbols of the God Shiva and has its mention in the Rig Veda, the most ancient collection of Hindu sacred verses and hymns.

The Somnath Temple is known as the Shrine Eternal for it has survived many shocks of time and has risen like a Phoenix each time it was destroyed.

The first temple of Somnath is said to have existed before the beginning of the Christian era. The present temple is the seventh temple built on the original site. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, then Home Minister & the first Deputy Prime Minister of India took a pledge on November 13, 1947 for its econstruction which was completed on December 1, 1995.

The Present temple is built in the Chalukya style of temple architecture and reflects the skill of the Sompuras, Gujarat's master masons. Such a temple has not been constructed in India during the last 800 years.

Around Somnath

The   beach  of Somnath  is  unshaded  but lovely,  the  views  stupendous, and  you  can  enjoy  cool,  fresh  coconuts,  camel  rides, and  spray  of   the  waves  as  you  wade  along  the  shoreline. Park  your  car outside  the  temple and  walk  down  to   the Prabhas  Patan museum to  see  the  remains  of  the  11th  century  version  of Somnath  temple,  with  5  domes  and  multiple  pillars, fine  11 th  century  sculpture  of   lord Agni,  lord  Shiva,  lord Vishnu, Apsaras and  Goddesses.

The  most famous  excursion  from  here  is  of course  Sasan, the  headqaurters  of the 1412  sq  km  Gir  national park &  wildlife  sanctuary, one  of  the  most  important  wildlife  preserves  in India. The  tapestry  of  deciduous forests, rolling  grasslands, semi-evergreen  flora,  7  rivers  and  many lakes,  offer   great  wildlife  viewing.

We guess it was mystic enough to get you plan your desired trip...when you get back next month, we would present you yet another escape just as exciting.
